The occasion was Christmas Eve. The text was the great story from Luke 2 of a baby born in Bethlehem and of shepherds rocked by mortal terror and breathtaking joy as they learned about it. In the news that week were stories of two young women, one heroic, the other tragic. Click "read more" to see what happened when the Jesus story got connected to their stories, and to our stories too.

From Messiah's pastors--
Last Friday (Feb. 20) many newspapers, radio shows, television commentators, and podcasts carried the news that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America had announced something about the topics of Human Sexuality and Ministry Policies having to do with ‘partnered gay and lesbian’ clergy. Just what it was that the various media thought the church had announced...

Messiah’s Diane Dixon knows more than most of us about praying for our troops overseas. As the wife of a soldier and a soldiers’ mom, she’s been doing it for years, especially the past four. In 2003 sons Nick and Dan served a stint in Kosovo...

There are few sources of comprehensive data on church membership and religious affiliation for the United States today. Perhaps the leading organization to address this is the Glenmary Research Center, which publishes Religious Congregations and Membership in the United States, 2000.

Last Wednesday, April 5: Messiah School Principal Kyle Chuhran brought this year's Lenten Midweek series to a close with a reflection on basic habits of the Christian family. With four children at home and a daytime school family of over 200 to lead and care for, Mr. Chuhran spends most of every day inculcating the kind of habits that make for people who are strong in the Lord. For his thoughts on some these, click below on "Read more..."

The date was March 29, and it was Kathy Neumann's turn to help us think about the basic habits that form and shape the lives of Christian people. Kathy's topic was service. We who know her would be hard pressed to think of anyone better suited to teach us about that. Teach Kathy did, as you'll see by clicking below on "Read more..." To confirm what you'll quickly surmise, Kathy teaches the second grade at Messiah Lutheran School.

The date was March 22nd, the fourth Wednesday in Lent. At the midweek service that evening Associate in Ministry Priscilla Hinsch helped us to reflect on the habit of prayer. This was the third in our Lenten series of reflections on some of the essential habits that God uses to form and shape us as Christian people. Click on "Read more..." below for a splendid reflection by Messiah School's Cheryl Chuhran on the whys and hows of the basic Christian habit of daily Bible study. The reflection was offered at the Lenten midweeek service on Wednesday, March 8. Our theme and prayer this Lent is "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9). Nothing does more to build faith and confidence in Jesus than certain basic patterns of behavior that Christian people have been following and encouraging in each other since the days of the Church's infancy. Mrs. Chuhran's reflection is the first of several such reflections that will be appearing here over the next several weeks.

Click below on "Read More" for the text of an address to the congregation by Leonie Braun, delivered recently at Messiah's Reformation weekend services. Leonie, a member of Messiah since 1993, was speaking in her capacity as Co-Chair of the Fall Pledge Campaign. We publish her remarks for the sake of persons who didn't get to hear them, but also because those did hear them may well be eager to read them again.

Hello from Misaka West Village, Mwerkera Zambia, Africa where I am staying during Peace Corps training. I have been very blessed to have a Christian host family and my host mother told me that she had prayed and that God had sent me to her. Right now we are still training. I live in a hut with a door and thatched roof. I have a mattress surrounded by mosquito netting and a table and bookshelf. I have my own bath shelter—bucket baths and pit latrine. I have a bike for riding to and from sessions and a typical day goes like this....
Note: Please pray for our sister in Christ as she works with the Peace Corps in Africa. Please contact the church office if you would like to send a letter to Sarah.

Two weeks ago we recommended a series of Lenten devotions by theologian Edward H. Schroeder. We've just run across another excellent series, this one from The Lutheran Hour. The author is Christine Weerts, a cousin-in-law to Pr. Burce. Ms. Weerts and her husband live in Selma, Alabama where she (a Lutheran) works with the Edmundite Missions, a Roman Catholic ministry to the poor. Her writing is clear and lucid, it expands our horizons, and it glows with profound faith in Christ. You can reach this series by clicking here or by...

Lent starts next week. Ash Wednesday is February 9. As always Christians are encouraged to use Lent as a time for prayer, devotion, and--by God's grace--renewal. We strongly encourage all members and friends of Messiah to set a few minutes aside every day this Lent for family or personal devotions.
